Epidural

This was in response to Carla's poll about the epidural. I didn't have one with my first because I was so terrified of needles. I heard all the horror stories of being paralyzed and causing damage.

Ten years later when I had my second I became brave and did it!!! I don't know what in the world I was thinking not having one with my first. I felt better after they gave me the epidural than I had my whole pregnancy!!! However, when they came in to administer it I was having pretty close contractions and was scared about having one while they were putting it in. The nurse was great. I had a contraction while they were giving me the epidural and the nurse just walked me through it and it was a piece of cake. Hats off to the nurse and anesthesiologist!!!

When we were expecting our third I told my husband I was going to call the hospital and find out what happens if I go into labor in the middle of the night and there is no anesthesiologist AT the hospital. He looked at me with this weird look and said "don't call them that's silly" (or something like that). I said "I'm the one that's going to be in all this pain and I want to be sure that he is there". Then he said "yeah that's righ, I'd call too". I was induced with the first and second and the third happened naturally at night. I hadn't preregistered (make sure you do!), we got to the hosp at 10pm, contractions 2min apart, and at 12am, contractions 1min apart, after a long list of questions, lots of contractions, and every skeletal muscle in my body getting a great workout, I had my epidural!!! Finally I was able to relax!!! Too bad they don't have a prenatal epidural!!!

I am a HUGE fan of epidurals!  As a nurse, I know the ups and scary downs.  But, I also know the kind of schooling and training that goes in to the anesthesiologists.  I've had an epidural with both of my kids and will definetly have one with the third one coming in December!!

I had a c-section with my first, second and fourth. With my third, I had a VBAC and had an epidural. I told the anesthesiologist that he had the best job in the whole hospital! LOL!

With some people an epidural will dramatically speed up the dilation process. My neice was given an epidural when she was dilated to a 3. She went almost immediately to 10cm.
